Doctors

I don’t remember if I mentioned this or not but my long time family Doctor (Dr. W) has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It is very sad. We have been going to see him for well over fifteen years. In fact he delivered Aaron. He has been very good to our family and it is hard to see him struggling with his own health.

I needed to make an appointment and Mom said that the other doctors that practice in the same building are taking over his patient load. I have a choice of Dr. B, Dr. H or Dr. W. I decided to check the College of Physicians and Surgeons website to see if they had anything to say about these men (Yes they’re all men. I have no problem with a male doctor.) First I looked up my doctor just because.

Dr. W
Current Status Licensed for Practice - Currently Inactive
Medical Degree M.B.,B.S. - 1970 - United Kingdom [London]

Yep that sounds right.

Check the next one:
Dr. B
Current Status Licensed for Practice
Medical Degree M.B.,B.S. - 1971 - United Kingdom [London]

Hey look, they graduated the same year!

Dr. H
Current Status Licensed for Practice
Medical Degree M.B.,Ch.B. - 1970 - Edinburgh (United Kingdom)

I’m seeing a pattern here…

Dr. W
Current Status Licensed for Practice
Medical Degree M.B.,B.S. - 1970 - United Kingdom [London]

OMFSM! They must have been classmates!

I’m scheduled to see Dr. B this afternoon. I can’t wait to see if he actually went to school with the rest of them.

BTW, at one point I thought it might be kind of nice to get a “younger” doctor. You know, one that will be around for awhile? Well, it isn’t going to happen with this bunch!!!

Blaine Larsen: Rockin' You Tonight

I initially picked up Blaine's first cd "Off to Join the World" from the library. I was blown away. He is so young but he has been blessed with a deep rich voice and a maturity that reaches far beyond his 22 years.

ROCKIN' YOU TONIGHT
CUT-BY-CUT
I DON'T KNOW WHAT SHE SAID (Cory Batten/Kent Blazy/Lane Turner)
It was an easy pick! When I first heard it, I absolutely fell out of my chair laughing. It's funny and it's a little different and it let us do some neat things with the production. I'm really glad it turned into the first single, because people really love it out on the road.

This song has done really well on country radio. I love it and listen to it every time it comes on. It strikes me as a cute follow up to George's "Seashores of Old Mexico"
LET ALONE YOU ( Carson Chamberlain/Gary Harrison/Sonny Tillis)
When I heard this song I just flipped out. It sounded like something George Strait would have cut ten years ago (and I love George Strait) and it would have been a big hit for him. I've always wanted to find a song like this, just to pay tribute to him, and when I heard it I called to put it on hold and they said, "Man, I hate to tell you this, but Strait's got it on hold." We called his manager and label and said, "If he doesn't cut it, please let us know, because we'll take it. He ended up not cutting it so I snatched it up.

Okay, that is the coolest story I have ever heard :D This song is awesome too. One that I will listen to over and over and visibly relax each time.
ROCKIN' YOU TONIGHT (Tim Johnson/Blaine Larsen)
I was always a big John Mellencamp fan, and this song feels in that vein. It’s acoustic but rocking with a great guitar lick that that's more rangy, digging in and rocking out a little bit.

Well said Blaine. Rockin' you tonight, holding my baby, watching you sleep etc. etc. It's a re-occuring question in country music. "I'm not with you, so who is?" Blaine handles it very well and ends off with the fact that he's "rockin' you tonight" via his music.
BABY DON'T GET HOOKED ON ME (Mac Davis)
I had never heard it before Tim brought it to me. We had a few different covers in mind and we thought it would be cool to find something that was older that hadn't been covered that not everybody would know. This is one of those that everybody in my parents' generation knows and hopefully will enjoy hearing it again and people my age are being exposed to it for the first time.

I'm part of Blaine's generation and hearing this song for the first time. I *love* it though!!! I can't wait to sing along to it in the car.
NO WOMAN ( Blaine Larsen/Tim Johnson)
Tim and I wrote it probably a year ago and we wrote it in less than an hour. We were just writing, as we do--just get in a room and write, and when we make the record we just throw everything in the pot. I like it because it's got a little attitude and it's kind of speaking to all us guys, giving a funny twist to the fact that we can go astray when it comes to treating our women right.

This is a fun upbeat song with a great groove. Makes me want to dance.
LOL, get a load of these lyrics: "Congratulations Einstein, you've solved the equation for 'two minus one', No woman's gonna hang around, for some man who can't figure it out"
THEY DON'T GROW ENOUGH ROSES (Tim Johnson/Clint Daniels)
Tim wrote that, and it's an old song. I remember hearing it since I've been coming to town. He would play it out at writers' nights and I loved it, loved the melody, loved singing it.

Similar vein to Brad Paisley's "How Many Flowers Have to Die" but a softer sounding song.
I'M IN LOVE WITH A MARRIED WOMAN (Marc Beeson/Tim Johnson)
Another Tim Johnson song. Tim will never pitch me his songs, because he's my producer, and he thinks it's a conflict of interest. He doesn't even go through his catalog. All the songs that are on here came from me looking through his stuff and finding it. I love the twist of this song. To me it sounds like a classic country song, and I just got married, so it was kind of cool to sing it. Plus, my wife likes it.

This is a very sweet song. Di and I were in Seattle/Tacoma the day Blaine got married. I wish I would have know it was happening and where. I totally would have crashed the wedding :D
SPOKEN LIKE A MAN (David Frasier/Ed Hill/Josh Kear)
Just a fun song. I like the groove of it, and I really like the fiddle part on the intro. I like that it has as good message, and what I like most is that it's relatable. It sounds like the people I grew up with. And it's a "love your woman" song, a really positive thing.

I agree with Blaine. The fiddle intro on this song is awesome. Totally grabs your attention. Fun, fun song.
LIPS OF A BOTTLE (duet with Gretchen Wilson) (Tim Johnson/Blaine Larsen/David Bleam)
I wrote this song two-and-a-half years ago with my former math teacher, Dave Bleam, who taught me to play guitar back when I couldn't even tune the thing. It was written before "Redneck Woman" came out, before I'd ever heard Gretchen sing. Once I did, I thought, "She's awesome. THAT is a country singer." It was always my fantasy that I would have her sing on that song--it was almost a joke the way I'd bring it up. Then, lo and behold, we got out on the Redneck Revolution tour with her and we became friends. I thought, 'I'm just going to go ask her.' I was so nervous--I don't know why--but I got her in a room and played her the demo and asked her if she would sing it and she said she would right on the spot.

On his first cd Blaine had a song called "If Merle Would Sing My Song". It was about a young artist going to Nashville and feeling that if Merle Haggard would sing his song, then he could prove to his family that he had arrived and would make it in Country Music. This one has nothing to do with music but it is a duet with someone who has made a pretty big name for herself. It's a nice song. Their voices blend quite well.

On some level it reminds me of Keith Urban's "Tonight I Wanna Cry" Not afraid to admit that you're sitting at home drinking to dull the pain.
SOMEONE IS ME (Joe Doyle/Josh Kear)
This song was really inspiring to me because it talks about doing something for mankind in general, about the fact that we need to stop making excuses for our problems and just go out and do something about them. It doesn't put the blame on anybody else. It's saying, "I need to be doing something if I don't like the way things are."

From what I've heard so far, I like this song. I look forward to listening to it closer and really catching the meaning of it.
I DON'T WANNA WORK THAT HARD (Monty Criswell/Brandon Kinney)
Quite honest I didn't like the song at first but I played it for my wife and she just freaked out. She loved that song, and I don't know what it is, but if somebody else starts liking it, you think, "Well, maybe that's pretty good," so I started listening to it a bunch and it got in my head and it grew on me.

Now that's love. Recording a song just because your wife likes it :) This is a funky song. I like the title too :D
AT THE GATE ( Blaine Larsen/Rory Lee Feek/Tim Johnson)
The thing about that song that makes me really love it is that everything in there is true. Every scenario that's described in that song happened to one of the three of us who wrote it, so it's a very, very personal song. I was glad to be part of writing that song. It was a great experience.

Who hasn't sat around and thought about what heaven will hold? Blaine and his co-writers did one day and then put it to music!

N.U.T.S.

On the radio yesterday someone was talking about N.U.T.S.

Nagging
Unfinished

Nuts make you crazy. I’m facing a bunch of them right now. Wish me luck as I deal with my NUTS!!!

What Could Have Been

The following was written Friday afternoon. For some reason I forgot to post it.
Yesterday after my dentist appointment I stopped by my old office to say “hi”. It was a glimpse at what could have been.

I spoke for awhile with on of my co-workers and she told me all about the changes that are happening. There are some very exciting things on the horizon and it made me a little sad that I'm not part of it. Once I left though I realized that I am definitely where I am supposed to be. Even though what they are going through is exciting, it would drive me nuts because it is very unstructured at this point.

I love my new job and that visit helped show me that I am on the right track. It's always nice to have that confirmation though.

I have a really exciting update to this but I can't share yet. Stay tuned!

Boom!

My head feels like it's going to explode. I'm dealing with a total information overload right now. I love reading and I love storing details but I feel like if I have to try and absorb one more piece of information my brain is going to go <>

I think I'll go shopping. That takes something of my never ending to do list and hopefully will give me a reprive from written text, which I'll deal with later.

Ciao,
~Heidi

Why, Why, Why?

Why does something make sense when Joe explains something and it makes sense when Susan explains something but when I try and explain to Susan what Joe said, I can’t make it sound logical???

Tooth Update

I went to the dentist today. He checked it out, took an x-ray and gave me an estimate of about $175. That would cover taking out the existing filling, putting in a new one and fixing up the side of the tooth. I asked him if it would be okay to wait until my insurance takes effect in a month or so and he said it would be. The tooth isn't cracked and because the nerve isn't exposed it will be annoying but I won't loose my tooth or anything. So, I'm booked to go in for my over due cleaning and tooth repair in July.

No corn nuts for me for the next month or so :P

Good Bye Tooth

So, I promised you a review of the new Starbucks sandwhich when I used my coupon. I'm betting that you don't want to know that it broke my tooth though. I got the "Okanagan Chicken Salad" sandwhich. Very tasty, very soft...except for that nasty hard bit, which turned out to be tooth. I appear to have broken the second molar from the back. I had a cavity filled in it *years* ago so it may just be that disintegrating. It might be my tooth. I won't know for sure until my dentist appointment at 12:40 tomorrow. In the meantime I will finish my sandwhich, while chewing on the other side and I will drink my mocha-coconut frappacino unless the cold bothers my tooth, which so far it hasn't. When I asked the dental assistant what I should do if my tooth started being sensitive to hot and cold she said "Don't eat anything hot or cold". Great. Thanks. That clears that up :P Anyhow, I'll report after my appointment. Let's hope they are willing to hold off on billing until my dental coverage kicks in next month!

No holiday for you

Okay, so I was wrong. Monday, in Canada was Victoria Day. For some reason I thought it was a holiday for everyone in the Commonwealth. I've stand corrected though. Sorry about that!

So, what did I do with my long weekend? Well, I've already blogged about Friday night. The rest of the weekend was pretty laid back. Saturday Dad was powerwashing the house and then painting. I slept in and then just hung out until the bible study in the evening.

Sunday was church and after lunch I went over to Jenna's for awhile. She, her sister Katherine and I did a bit of shoe shopping and then I dropped them off at their parents house. Mom, Dad, Aaron Seth and I went to the 7 o'clock showing of "Over the Hedge" It was quite enjoyable. Very funny with a lot of memorable lines. Afterwards we went out to Red Robins which was a lot of fun.

Monday Seth wanted to go to the outlets at Tulalip. We knew it was on I5 but none of us (Seth, Mom or Aaron) thought to check how far South it was. By the time we got to Burlington it was POURING and I decided I didn't want to drive any further so we just went to the outlets there. Didn't buy anything but we had fun browsing.

Getting back across the border was i.n.s.a.n.e. It took two and half HOURS!!! I haven't waited that long in a border line up in YEARS. We had fun though.

Last night I headed back out to Janis', since it's been awhile since I was there. I rented "Romor Has It..." and made macaroni and cheese. The movie was pretty good. Very light, which was what I was looking for.

Today I'm back at work and busy. Have I mentioned lately that I really like me job though? :D

Driving

It's a good thing I like driving! Yesterday after work I drove down to Sea-Tac Airport to pick up a friend of a friend. Man that is a LONG drive. I had Angels & Deamons playing and I'll tell you, the fast paced suspenseful nature of that book didn't make rush hour through Seattle any better :P

I made it down and back though and had a great time talking with Naomi on the way home.

Have a great weekend everyone, and a great long weekend for all of my friends in the Commonwealth :)

Favourites: the May 18th edition

Why are these things so much fun to fill out? You'd better read it. I'll be quizzing you on it :D
~Heidi

Favourites...

Clothes

Jeans: Well I don’t wear “jeans” per se but my favourite denim skirts are the one I got from Walmart and the one I got from Jacob.
Underwear: Walmart six pack. Cotton, bikini cut in funky colours :)
Sneakers: I don’t wear sneakers. I have a pair of no name ones but I haven’t worn them in forever
Day Bag: My guess purse from Jenna. I love it!
Socks: I *love* socks. I have a drawer full of them. The cheaper the better in a variety of colours :)
Signature Accessory: I wear two rings all the time. My grandmothers wedding band and a cheap costume jewelry one I bought a few years ago. Up until a couple of years ago I wore my CM watch too. I haven’t replaced it since it died though.

Food and Beverage

Craving: Salt n’ Vinegar chips. Monthly. Like clockwork :)
Diet plan: M.O.D.E.R.A.T.I.O.N. and small portions oh, and lots and lots and lots of water.
Coffee: with LOTS of milk…preferably in latte form...
Coke or Pepsi: Coke baby! But I’m not drinking pop this month so that’s not a fair question.
Beer: Domestic, Light and Cold  not that I’ve ever had it…
Cocktail: Anything frou frou and fruity :D

Electronics

Cell phone: an ancient AudioVox Telus pay n’ talk. It was my brothers, his girlfriend had it for awhile and now I have it. It’s ancient but it still works and it’s cheaper then a plan.
Computer: I have a Dell at work and we have a PC of some sort at home. My boss asked the other day if I needed a laptop and I gave her an intelligent answer regarding my level of work blah, blah, blah. I should have just said yes!!!
Television: Yep, a 20 something inch one at home with about 30 channels.
Favorite Toy: Hmmm…All my scrapbook stuff is TOOLS so that doesn’t count ;) I like Melissa’s answer. The internet.
Last Song Added to your iPod: This is assuming I have an iPod :P In the absence of said device, the last song I specifically looked up so I could rate it so it would play on my lanchcast radio was Danielle Peck’s “Findin’ a Good Man” GREAT song :)

Grooming Products

Moisturizer: None, any suggestions?
Cologne: Avon. Haiku and Wink. I don’t wear it very often though.
Razor: It is disposable and it is pink.  Hey! Me too :)
Shaving Cream: Gillette Satin Care

AND....

Favorite Music Genre: LOL anyone wanna take a stab at this one???
Guilty Pleasure: Chick flicks
Worst Job You Ever Had: I’ve been pretty lucky. I didn’t like my last job but I was able to spend a lot of time on the internet so it wasn’t all bad.
Your Philosophy: If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.
Magazine Subscriptions: Country Weekly…even if it does arrive a week and a half after it’s on the newsstands
Last Book Read: I’m in the middle of a Mexican mystery, a romance novel and Angels & Demons. I gave up on trying to read A&D though so I’m listening to it on cd in my car.
Final Thoughts: The voice of Maxmillian Kohler in A&D sounds eerily like Yoda, only talk better does he.

Mocha-Coconut

Good news! Starbucks actually has the coconut syrup. I thought it was part of the concentrate that they use for the Banana Coconut drink but it's seperate. Yesterday I ordered a mocha frap with coconut syrup. It was yummy. The only problem was they forgot to put the toasted coconut flakes IN the drink. They had them on top but not blended in. I'll fix that next time :)

I'm just glad that my drink is "back"

Oh, and I forgot to mention. The other morning when I stopped for my drink, I got a coupon for a free sandwhich. I'll let you know how it is once I have it.

July 31

Ok... I stole this from Melissa who stole this from Pamela who stole it from some other people....

Go to Wikipedia and do a search for your birthday (day and month only, exclude the year). Post three facts, two births and one death on your blog including the years.

1498 - On his third voyage to the Western Hemisphere, Christopher Columbus becomes the first European to discover the island of Trinidad.
1917 - The Third Battle of Ypres starts in Flanders.
1987 - A rare, class F-4 tornado rips through Edmonton, Alberta, killing 27 people and causing $330 million in damage.

I remember this last event. We called it Black Friday. It was very, very scary. My dad was out of town, which had me feeling a bit jumpy even though we were 700 miles away from Edmonton. I remember my Grandma calling and saying that this had happened while she and my aunt were at West Edmonton Mall. All of my family was fine but there was a lot of damage to the surrounding areas.

1965 - J. K. Rowling, English novelist
1980 - Harry Potter, fictional character, written by J. K. Rowling

Think there's a link? Hey! Harry's a year older then me...that doesn't make sense :(
1108 - King Philip I of France (b. 1052)
1547 - King Francis I of France (b. 1494)

Bad day for the kings of France!!!

Okay, that's two deaths but I thought it was interesting.

Only 74 days till my birthday!

Word of the Day #15: force majeure

force ma·jeure ( P ) Pronunciation Key (fôrs mä-zhûr, frs)
n.
Superior or overpowering force.
An unexpected or uncontrollable event.

A French term literally translated as "greater force", this clause is included in contracts to remove liability for natural and unavoidable catastrophes that interrupt the expected course of events and restrict participants from fulfilling obligations.

Cool! I hadn't heard this term until just now.

Stream of conciousness

I have a bunch of things to post but I was attempting to actually work tdoay so I didn't take the time to post them. Let's see if I can capture them all in one.

Driving home is always an adventure. To get from work to my house I have to take a bridge over the river and then drive on a fairly busy highway that has been under major construction for over two years. It's not a fun road...but it will be nice if they ever finish fixing it up. :D The speed limit along there is 80 kms but there is about five sets of traffic lights so unless you hit it right, it's stop and go. Today it was quite congested. Going the OTHER way was gridlock. I assume someone had an accident on the bridge (because that's where I noticed the back up starting). In the narrowest part where they are doing the bulk of construction I had to pull over for two police cars. Blue and red lights make me nervous in general. Having to slow down and pull over in the middle of a bunch of traffic on a crappy road makes me even more nervous. I survived though. I hope the people in the accident are okay too.

Once I get through the highway part I drive through our "Historic Downtown". I go through six sets of lights that way. People don't always believe me but it is usually the fastest way to get home. Except for yesterday. The power was out. A HUGE grid was knocked out by something. This included the downtown. It took f.o.r.e.v.e.r. to get through that. Again, I survived, but like I said. It's never dull!

So yesterday I got home and there was no power there either. It's weird, you get so used to having electronics available and humming in the background and when they aren't or don't, it's rather creepy. My plans for the evening had consisted of watching NCIS and House. Because I didn't have any guarantee of the power coming back on (the power company estimated 10pm) I decided to cut my losses and head out to Janis'. I had swaps to work on and at least SHE had power :D

On the way in I picked up "Days of Thunder" I've never seen it and I was in the mood. Maybe it was the heat ;) Great movie. That's how races should be done "and they're off" three seconds later "in the fifieth lap..." LOL Anyhow I quite enjoyed it. Tom Cruise back in his normal days :)

This morning I treated myself to Starbucks. They introduced a new drink. Banana Coconut Frappacino. I debated the merits of having a frapp for breakfast but since it was already almost 15oC I decided it was okay. The drink is...okay. My favourite part is the toasted coconut. My all time favourite Starbucks drink was the mocha-coconut frap that they had a few years back. Mere and I drank quite a few of them on on one of our trips to Calgary. Going through the drive through on a sunny morning brought back great memories :) I think what I'll do for this drink is just get a regular mocha frap but have them blend the coconut flakes in it and add some on top. It's a poor substitute but I don't think I can handle that much banana.

So there. Now you are mostly up to date. Those could have all been seperate posts but I'm doing it as one. Have a great day!

Word of the Day #13: obtuse

ob·tuse (b-ts, -tys, b-)
adj.

1. Lacking quickness of perception or intellect.
2. Not sharp or acute; blunt.

This is how I feel some days. I know I'm not and I know I'm being hard on myself but I am frustrated right now. If this is being "challenged" then I guess I am. FWIW.

Ice Cream Man

I've blogged about the ice cream man and how he drives *right* under my office window every second day to mock me. Well today one of my co-workers treated us all. I got a "Super Ice" you know, the ones that used to be called rockets or something. Red, white and blue. The flavours are listed as: cherry, white lemon and blue raspberry. Not sure what "white lemon" means but it was yummy!!!
Happy summer :D

Garlic Breath

I just had a very yummy caeser salad for lunch. Now I have extreme garlic breath. Good thing I'm not planning on kissing anyone today! :O
~Heidi...off to find some breath mints...

Back at work

Good Morning Everyone,
I'm back at work today. So far so good. I spent most of yesterday on the couch and it really seemed to help. Let's hope today goes better then yesterday.

dizzy

Well, that made for an interesting day. I had trouble falling asleep last night and then even more trouble waking up this morning. I did make it work on time...with about three seconds to spare :P I wasn't feeling great this morning but I attributed it to cramps. I went for lunch and went up to my favourite park over looking the river so I could get some sun. By the time I got back to the office I was feeling rather light headed. Within a half an hour I was getting really nauseous and starting to feel like throwing up. I decided I couldn't work anymore so I closed all my programs and logged off my computer. When I stood up to get my purse out of my filing cabinet a huge wave of nausea hit me and I put my head down on the top of the filing cabinet. I was starting to black out so I turned to go back to my chair. At that point I did black out momentarily and I think I actually fell down. I made it over to my chair and when I could see straight again I was able to call one of my co-workers down. (My office is at the end of the hall so they didn't know I was going through this) My co-worker immediately took me to the back room, got me an ice pack (because I had broken out in a cold sweat) and helped me lay down. She called my parents and they came and picked me up. I wasn't feeling well enough to drive.

Scary stuff. I've been resting all afternoon. I'm not sure what caused it. My cramps, bad potato salad, low iron, too much sun (we had a picnic for mothers day yesterday and I did burn my shoulders a bit). It's really hard to say. I'm feeling a bit better now. We'll see how the rest of the evening goes.

Oh, and on a happier note? My TMJ seems to be gone. I can chew without a problem and my ear isn't sore at all.

Whine Alert

I hurt. My ear hurts (because that’s where my TMJ pain is manifesting). Where I got hit by the puck hurts (It on my back below my shoulder and not really under my arm behind that. Weird spot but its sore) My upper back hurts because I slept funny last night and now my hand is sore for some reason.

Not to mention that I’m struggling with a task that I have had enough of so it’s making my head hurt. Not good. Not good at all.

One positive though. I told our receptionist that I’d provide phone back up on Thursday’s and Friday’s while she goes for lunch. That means that we need to stagger our lunches which means I’m back to taking lunch at 11:30. That’s fine with me. A bit earlier means I miss the lunch rush everywhere and it makes the morning not so long.

Okay back to work. I have GOT to finish this task. Unpleasant or not.

Hat

I bought a hat. Why? Because it fits really well and it was only three dollars. Isn't it cute? :D

Temporal Mandible Joint Syndrom

Okay I don't have the syndrom (I don't think) but according to the doctor, I sprained my Temporal Mandible Joint. I've had a pain in my ear/jaw for the past three days and yesterday I stopped by the clinic on my way home. That's what he diagnosed it as. Basically he figures I've stretched the ligament out. There's not much I can do aside from eating soft food, using a warm compress if I want and taking advil. It's weird though. I didn't know you could sprain your jaw :P

BTW the temporal "bone" is the one in your head where your temple is. The Mandible is your jaw. The joint is where they connect.

I told everyone on SS and I googled it and apparently it's more common then you'd think. Up to 30% of women suffer from it and one website even says it's a common strain for people in desk jobs.

The doctor (who was fresh out of med school himself) said that there are actually two doctors at UBC who specilize in this joint. That's it. That is ALL they study.

I hate being a stat :P

Brad on Leno

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

After the hockey game last night I stopped by at my brother's pizza shop for some chicken wing things and cheesy bread. It was only 10 o'clock, I assumed my parents would still be up and we could share a snack during CSI:Miami. When I got home the house was completely dark. I forgot that Dad had caught the 6:00am communter train that morning and Mom had to drive him which meant they were both up around 5:00. Even the promise of Horatio Caine on the TV couldn't keep them up.

So, I enjoyed my snack all by myself (no I didn't eat all of it) while watching CSI. I considered staying up to see if there was anything interesting on the late night talk shows but chose to just go to bed like a normal person instead.

This morning I find out that BRAD PAISLEY was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno!!! I am so mad! That would have been AWESOME to see! Hmph. So much for being a "normal person" :P

Word of the Day #12: verb

verb ( P ) Pronunciation Key (vûrb)
n.
Abbr. V or vb.
The part of speech that expresses existence, action, or occurrence in most languages.
Any of the words belonging to this part of speech, as be, run, or conceive.
A phrase or other construction used as a verb.

I got the minutes back from my boss. She has reviewed them and added her suggestions. (We typically go back and forth a few times before they are finalized.) She said that they look really good but I have a tendency to leave the verbs out of my sentences. Instead of saying "Discussion occured on xxx topic" it should say "There was ample discussion on xxx topic" or something like that. Good to know. She had great things to say about the rest of the minutes though. She's quite impressed. :D

My Weekend

It’s Tuesday already and I have yet to update my blog. Let’s see, what’s happened? Oh yeah, update on the issue I was referring to in the “initiative” post, I did it yesterday. I wouldn’t let myself go for lunch until I did. It was painless and I actually got a good answer. So WHY do I procrastinate? THAT is an eternal question :P

Saturday Sue and I drove down to Camano Craft Hideaway and joined Darrcie for a National Scrapbook Day crop. The CCH is a very nice facility. I would love to go there for a weekend. Crossing the boarder was kind of funny.

Boarder Guard: Where do you live
Us: XXX and XXX
BG: How do you know each other?
Us: Through scrapbooking
BG: Where are you going?
Us: We are meeting friends at Camano Island
BG: Why?
Us: Scrapbooking
BG: How do you know these friends?
Us: Scrapbooking
BG: What’s in the trunk?
Us: Scrapbooking supplies
BG: What do you scrapbook?
At this point Sue gave an intelligent answer to the effect of “pictures of friends and family and activities”. The funny part? What did I scrapbook this weekend? PICTURES OF SCRAPBOOKING!!! LOL Of the trip Sue and I took with a bunch of other consultants to Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast last June :D

I’ve been working on those layouts for a loooong time. I needed to get reprints from another person that was there. I finally did and finished the whole event this weekend. It feels GREAT to be done and I’m really happy with how they turned out.

Sunday I helped out with Sunday School. I’ve given it over to a friend of mine who is excellent with the kids and actually *prepares* crafts and stuff. I was good at running it but I never got anything ready. They get tired of colouring pretty quick :P

After church a bunch of us went out for dinner. It was really nice. After that I decided that since it was too windy to go for a walk and nothing interesting was happening at home, I’d head out to Janis’. Once there I talked to Sue who said that she had found my 12” trimmer in her trunk. I then drove into New West(?) and met her at a Tim Horton’s to pick it up. It was kind of interesting going in there because I’ve never been to that area. She gave me basic instructions but I was driving blindly thinking “how hard can it be to find a Wal-Mart???” I did find it without difficulty and got my trimmer back :) Thanks for meeting me Sue!

Yesterday I went to a hockey game in town. My friend Leah’s husband was playing. Unfortunately they got slaughtered 10-2 and I got a puck in the shoulder. Better me then their 15 month old daughter though!!!

So there, you are up-to-date on my oh so exciting life :P

Tonight I’m due to give blood…guess I’d better start drinking water!

Word of the Day #11: initiative

in·i·tia·tive ( P ) Pronunciation Key (-nsh-tv)
n.
The power or ability to begin or to follow through energetically with a plan or task; enterprise and determination.
A beginning or introductory step; an opening move: took the initiative in trying to solve the problem.

The power or right to introduce a new legislative measure.
The right and procedure by which citizens can propose a law by petition and ensure its submission to the electorate.

adj.
Of or relating to initiation.
Used to initiate; initiatory.

Idiom:
on (one's) own initiative
Without prompting or direction from others; on one's own.

I hate taking initiative. I used to be good at it, I know people (namely my bosses) like it when I do, but procrastination and initiative don't go together very well. Procrastination usually wins out.

Yesterday I came across something that I should have taken the initiative on and acted on. I didn't do it. This morning when asked, I had to say "No, but I will" Gotta love the corporate B.S. ::sigh:: Why can't I just do things that I know I need to do???

~Heidi...off to do something that she should have just done yesterday...after she relieves her bladder and gets a fresh glass of water... :D

Dilly Bars

One of the best things about my old office was that on hot days my boss would disappear for 15 minutes or so and come back with a box of Dairy Queen dilly bars. All the staff would stand just outside the front door in the sun and enjoy the cool treat.

Yesterday the ice cream man came by for the umpteenth time already this year. At lunch I took it upon myself to go out and pick up dilly bars for the new office. Judging by the groans of pleasure from my co-workers, they were a hit. Nothing like passing on a tradition!

~Heidi…who is currently enjoying one of the leftover dilly bars…

Photo Scavenger Hunt

In my "weekend away" post I mentioned the photo scavenger hunt that some of us participated in while waiting for the ferry to leave Lopez Island. Here are the pictures we took. If you mouse over each of them, you'll see a description of what we were looking for.

We had *so* much fun. It only ended up taking about 20 minutes and my team won :D

Mon femme est enceinte

As you know, my phone battery died on Thursday night. When I got home on Monday Dad said that I had a message waiting from my friend Jenna. I listened to it and the one she left on my cell phone (once I re-charged it). She wanted to get together for coffee. Okay, sounds good. Monday evening (after I gave up on trying to update my blog because the computer kept crashing) I called her. They (Jenna and her husband William) were just in the process of making dinner so I went over to their house to hang out.

The Monday after a board meeting is a very busy day so I was pretty tired by the time I got to Jenna's...at least that's my excuse. After some general "how are you, how was your weekend" chit chat, William asked me how my French was. I explained that I'm better at reading then writing but if it is a topic I'm familiar with then I can usually pick up on the basic words. He gave me a test sentence which I won't repeat here (and can't cause I forget the words). Then he gave me the following: "Mon femme est enceinte" Didn't mean a thing to me. I translated it to "My something is something". Hmph. Rather anticlimactic. Jenna filled in "It means 'my wife is pregnant'". Of course I focused on the words and how they didn't sound a thing like that. William was like "NO, you don't get it. MY WIFE IS PREGNANT!" Ooooooooh ::lightbulb:: Look at Jenna "Really? Congratulations!"

They have been trying pretty much since the day they got married (just over a year ago) so this is really exciting news. Right now it's looking like it will be a Christmas baby. She's been to the doctor who did the test and confirmed that everything looks good.

This is the second of my close friends that has announced they are expecting. It's awesome. I love babies :D

Congrats Jenna and William!!! You'll make fantastic parents.

Weekend Getaway

Arrgh! My computer crashed halfway through this post. Let's see if I can retype it.

The meeting finished around 4:30 pm. After a quick Starbucks run, I headed out and was across the border by 5:30. No counting my difficulties in finding Haggen's in Bellingham, the trip down was uneventful. It was actually really nice to have that quiet time to unwind from the board meeting.

I arrived at the Anacortes ferry terminal with plenty of time to spare before the 8:30 pm sailing. Because the ferry terminal is so far west, I actually had a pretty good view of Mount Baker. My exprience with most of Washington State is that they can't see it as well as those of us in the lower mainland so it was a nice treat.
The ferry ride was uneventful as well. I had a book which I finished by the time we docked and aside from enjoying the beautiful sunset and some mild people watching, it passed quickly.

Finding my way around Lopez Island in the dark was a bit more interesting. I only had to turn around twice though. Not bad. I did get a bit of scrapbooking done once I was there but because I had had such and early morning, I was the first to go to bed.

As an aside, this was the fourth bed I had slept in, in as many days. At Janis', at home, at the hotel and in Lopez. Going from the king sized bed at the hotel to the bunk bed at Lopez was a bit interesting but I slept very well.

Saturday was a nasty west coast day. It was really windy out and rained on and off during the day. Perfect scrapbooking weather :D No guilt at not being outside. If you can believe it, I didn't take any pictures at all. A few others were taking them and I know I can get theirs so I didn't bother. It was a really nice time though. I actually ended up running out of pictures and I did a few layouts for Darrcie to pass the time.

Sunday was a much nicer day. After cleaning up our scrap spaces and the house we had a nice lunch of leftovers and then headed down to the ferry terminal. This weekend was the annual "Tour de Lopez". 700+ bicycles on the island. That meant a lot more cars too. We arrived with plenty of time to kill before the 1:30 sailing but a lot of others had the same idea and we ended up missing it by about 20 cars. The next sailing wasn't until 5:30. That was a LONG wait. Fortunately it was quite nice out. A few of us decided to kill time by doing a photo scavenger hunt. It was a LOT of fun. I have an idea for sharing that, which I'll put in a seperate post too.

Having to wait for the 5:30 ferry messed up the sightseeing plans that some of us were hoping for. It was okay though. While it would have been fun to tour LaConner, I was just there last year. Instead I headed straight home...via Target and Walmart of course. Target didn't have anything to offer me but at Walmart I bought a hot pink t-shirt, a Kenny CD (Everywhere We Go) and some toiletries.

Getting back across the border was a breeze. Very, very few questions and I was "home" (at Janis') by 9:30ish (I spent a lot of time talking myself out of stuff at Target :P)

So all in all, a good weekend. THIS weekend, I'm headed BACK to Washington State for scrapbooking. This time my friend Sue and I are joining Darrcie on Camano Island. That is just for Saturday though. Gotta love my life :)

Hope you had as good of a weekend.

Luxury Living

What a weekend. I've been gearing up for it for a while now and it's hard to believe it's over already.

Thursday afternoon I finished up my last minute prep for the board meeting and then followed my boss and another co-worker to the hotel where the board meeting took place. The route they took to get there was via Starbucks (works for me!) where I got a mocha valencia frappacino (valencia=orange) and an almond blackberry tart (my new favourite Starbucks pastry).

At the hotel we used the valet parking and the bellman took our bags and stacks of files up to our rooms. When I walked into my room I was greeted with the pleasing little selection on the right. The card was a "thank you for using XXX hotel for your meetings blah, blah, blah" Very nice :)

I was on the tenth floor so I had a great view of the parking lot, runways and off in the distance, the ocean.
I had some time to kill before dinner so I settled into my room. This is me on the king sized bed (yes Mere, I bounced on it just for you ;))
Dinner was with on other coworker (everyone else had to work) at the Boathouse. We took a taxi there and had a very nice, very relaxed meal.

After dinner I met with my boss and the "Event Coordinator" to scope out the room. Confirmed that we'd have a conference call phone available, leather chairs, what time breakfast was etc. etc. It was really cool. I talked stuff over with my boss but she made me do all the communicating with the hotel staff...which is how it should be, this was just my first experience with that. I feel like a real "Execuitve Assistant" :D

We finished around 7:30 and I went back to my room to relax. My friend Deb tried to call but my cell phone died (!?) I knew the battery was low but I expected it to last longer then that. My phone was completly dead. As in, won't-even-turn-on-so-I-can-get-a-phone-number-off-it-dead. In case she had something important to say, I decided to try and track down her number. First try, the hotel room. Okay, there's a bible here but no phone book. I have an address book in the car, lets try that. The valet dude didn't like me going into the car but I reassured him quickly. Address book was just that...addresses :P Try the front desk, SHE'S UNLISTED!!! Check with the "business centre". All the computers are busy. ARRGH! Back to my room, call home, "Aaron? I left an emergency contact number on the fridge. What is it?" FINALLY got through to my friend. No it wasn't incredibly important but it killed time and it was good to talk to her :P At this time I realized that my watch battery is also dead. OMFSM!!!
At this point I decided it was time for a bath in my lovely soaker tub. I took the plate of goodies, a wine glass with water in it (I could have raided the mini bar but I figured I'd wait until I've been at my job for more then six weeks :P), angled the tv, just so, so I could watch CSI while soaking and filled the tub with citrus scented bubbles. It was wonderful. I could definitely get used to that :D
The bed was very comfortable but I didn't sleep all that well. Nervous about having to get up so early I guess. I was dreaming about trains falling off the tracks. Very disconcerting.

Everything went well the day of the meeting though. Aside from the techies unplugging my tape recorder when the moved the conference call phone and then forgetting to plug it back in of course. I got great reviews from my boss, coworkers and some of the board members. All in all it was a very positive experience and it's something I am looking forward to doing again. Now to deal with the twenty some odd pages of notes I took :P

I'll put the rest of my weekend in a seperate post.

~Heidi
