October 12 of 12

October 12th came and went and I didn't even register it. In fact it was almost a week later when I realized that it had passed and now it's a full ten days later that I'm finally getting around to blogging about it. Luckily this year in Canada, October 12th was Thanksgiving so I have lots of pictures to chose from (more than 12 but I'm just sharing that many here).
I spent Thanksgiving weekend in Alberta at my Uncle Tim and Aunt Candace's house. I drove up on Friday with Mom, Dad and Aaron. On Monday we were joined by my brothers Seth and Robert and Seth's girlfriend Brittany. Grandpa B and Aunty Liz (Mom's dad and sister) and my cousin Sharon and her two boys drove down from Edmonton for the day. Candace's Grandma Violet was there as well. So, along with Tim and Candace's four boys, we had a housefull!!!
So, on to the pictures. We start with a view of the "appetizer table". Part of what's there is actually dessert but we didn't worry too much about what was eaten when.

This is Candace and Grandma Violet. Awesome woman. Very sharp and funny. It was great to have her with us.

The Wii got quite a workout. Here Robert and Seth are playing Mario Cart while Brandin and Brittany watch. Later in the day I even got roped into a round of bowling. (foreground is Grandpa B and my dad)

Mom and Candace get the credit for our wonderful turkey dinner...of course the only people I actually got pictures of were Tim when he carved the turkey, (and not pictured) Dad when he carved the ham and Robert making gravy.

Grandpa is very hard of hearing so it's difficult to have a conversation with him. Here he is showing Aaron the watch he received after 25 years of service at his job...of course he got the watch in 1987 which is way before Aaron was even born! I was sitting on the couch playing paparazzi during this exchange and I have a whole series of photos as Aaron listens intently to what Granpa is telling him.

Just before Grandpa, Aunty Liz, Sharon and the boys headed home I made everyone pose for a series of "formal" shots. I'll spare you all of them but I'll show the one of us four kids with Grandpa.
Xander has taken a real shine to Brittany and Seth keeps teasing him that she's now his girlfriend. Seth found a long blonde hair on his shirt and he told Xander "your girlfriend is shedding on me again!" :)
Tim and Candace both have laptops and the boys spent a fair bit of time on them during the weekend. I love this shot of Xander because I captured his cute little toes curled up under his bum :)

Joshua Levi is just three months old and weighs less than the turkey we cooked. I thought a picture of him in the roasting pan (after we did dishes) was seasonally appropriate :D

Candace and I, just to prove I was actually there and not behind the camera the WHOLE day.

More Joshua. He's just too cute to resist! And, my favourite family activity, Settlers of Catan. We played a few games over the weekend but because people had to work the next day we finished by about 11. Still, I've had my "fix" for a little while.
So, that's Thanksgiving, Canadian style. And another "12 of 12" in the bag :)

This post brought to you by the letter “L”

Do you have a favourite letter of the alphabet? One that makes you happy to write? Mine is “L”. The capital version, in handwriting. I love forming it. I used to wish my mom had named me after her because her name started with L and when I was 13ish I had a crush on a guy, pretty much only because his last name started with L and I used to dream about being Mrs. L.

Now my new boss’s name starts with L so I get to write it LOTS. I still get pleasure out of forming that letter. Weird maybe but at least I’m consistent :)

I’m probably fooling myself by thinking I have time for this but I am excited to announce that I am the newest member of our local Genealogical Society. I attended a meeting back in January but then I never went back. The regular meetings are on the third Tuesday of each month which is awkward because my board meetings are typically scheduled that day too. Yesterday I went straight from work to the meeting and then I left the meeting early…which still meant I didn’t get home until after 8pm.

It’s only $20 for a one year membership in the Society and joining means I have access to their archives in the library whenever they are open. I’m hoping to take some time to review everything that I’ve collected over the past few years and start doing some digging to find more. I know that doing genealogy can be addictive but I still want to pursue it. Wish me luck!

I am regressing technologically

I’ve always been woefully behind when it comes to technology. I listen to music on the radio and from cd’s (no digital files for me!), I still have a cell phone (instead of a Blackberry or other equally as addicting device) and I don’t even have internet at home.

Lately I’ve been going backwards even more. I listen to cd’s at home but my “cd player” was a unit from Seth’s ex-girlfriend. Horribly beat up on and a few months ago the cd part stopped functioning so I was listening to music via my dvd player. Pathetic I know. Anyways, Mere took pity on me and loaned me her old stereo system. It’s a really nice unit with a three disk changer and…(drum roll…) a double tape deck!

Yes. That’s what I’m most excited about. LOL The thing is I have tapes that I haven’t listened to so it’s been fun to rediscover them…even if they are old technology.

Speak of tapes, guess what I bought last Friday? It seems like everyone is moving on to Blu-Ray and I bought a VHS player! LOL I set it up in my scrap room along with a small tv that I got off a friend who was cleaning house. Then I went over to my parents and raided their video collection.

I know it’s “old” technology but I’m excited!!!

Thursday Thunks

Again lifted from Toe-Ami :)

1. What color is your mouthwash?
I have green mouthwash left over from the last time I stayed at a hotel but I rarely use it.

2. Do you remember your first phone number? Have you called it recently?
First in BC (where I moved when I was 3) was my parents number. It's #2 on my speed dial and I easily call it once a day. Often more. And yes, I could dial it if I need to.

3. BPD in OKC's question- Do you have a super-secret hiding place and what's in it?
My whole craft room is a super secret hiding place LOL The most "secret" is where my passport is. But it's not hidden if you know where to look.

4. When was the last time you used a pay phone? How much did it cost to make the call?
Oh man. I don't remember! I feel like it hasn't been that long but I can't tell you where I was...

5. What was that noise?
Me silently screaming and attempting to resist strangling my boss.

6. Stef H's question-how long is a woodpecker's pecker?
LOL peckerwood?

7. How many comments did you receive on your last Thursday's Thunk?
None. But that's okay :)

Saying Good-bye

Four years ago today I "retired" as a Creative Memories Consultant. The decision was a long time coming (too long in fact) but it was still hard. I "celebrated" by attending a retreat with a wonderful group of "sister-CMC's" that I am still in contact with. They graciously let me attend even though at midnight the first night, I was officially not a CMC anymore.

Earlier this week I attended the closing out sale of one of the local scrapbook stores. I chatted briefly with the owner. She's really upbeat about the whole situation but, like me, she's had time to get used to the idea. All her customers are grieving but she's ready to move on. I totally know how it feels.

I loved my time as a CMC. I'd go back to it in a heartbeat if it was right for me, which it still may be at another time in my life. Right now it's just too much stress.

Here's to four years "since"!

The Heat is On!

My hometown is the proud host to a brand new AHL (Amercian Hockey League) team. Okay, the team isn't new. It's actually the relocated Quad City Flames but under this name, the Abbotsford Heat, they're new. The AHL is predominately an East Coast league and the next closest to us geographically are the Manitoba Moose.

Meredith's parents bought seasons tickets so she and I will hopefully get to go a few more times this year. Sunday was the first game.

Mere was most excited about the fights and there were three "good ones" so she was happy :) Final score was 6-4 for the Heat. Lots of scoring made the game really fun. Although it's great high-level hockey so it was non-stop action anyways.

The Heat are the farm team to the Calgary Flames and the Moose are the farm team to the Vancouver Canucks. Every time a goal was scored, at least half the crowd would cheer. There was as many Moose fans as Heat so it made it interesting.

The penalty shot by Hugo Carpentier late in the third was another highlight.

The Heat play in the brand new Entertainment and Sports Centre and aside from major parking issues, it's a great venue I can't wait to see more games!

September 12 of 12

I haven't posted a 12 of 12 since May although I have been taking pictures. This is a few days late but at least I'm posting it.

Saturday, September 12, 2009

I woke up at my regular weekday time (6:42 am) even though my alarm wasn't set. SO not cool because I ended up being kind of tired for the rest of the day. The benefit was I got my day started early which is always nice.

Since I was up I made myself a cup of coffee with the French Press I got for Christmas. I don't use it a lot but I have been lately.
Next I went down to the Farmers' Market. I wanted to take pictures there but I couldn't get a good angle. Instead I came home and took a picture of all my veggies after I put them in my beloved FridgeSmart Tupperware.

This weekend the Canadian Country Music Awards took place in Vancouver. I considered going to the show but I just couldn't swing it financially with New York and everything. On Saturday CMT hosted a Fan Fair Street Festival so I convinced Mom to go with me. Traffic was absolutely insane and we didn't even end up staying all that long. The festival was disorganized and crowded. On stage when we arrived was Steven Lee Olsen, Victoria Banks, Jessie Farrell (and her guitar player to her left) and, my favourite, Doc Walker.
I saw Doc Walker (the only act I really cared about) and then decided that since I've already met them twice and I have their autographs four times, I didn't need to stand in the forever long line to meet them again. I did take a stalkerish photo of them talking to other fans though :D Left is Chris, middle is Dave and right (cut off) is Murray.

Paul McGuire of CMT Canada (left) and Karen Daniels and Clay St. Thomas of JRfm introduced the next round of performers. Next up were Jason Blaine, Aaron Pritchett (and his guitar player), Johnny Reid, and Terri Clark. They had major technical difficulties during this set and Jason ended up playing guitar for Aaron on "Hell Bent for Buffalo". It was great to see Johnny (he ended up sweeping the awards ceremony on Sunday by winning Album of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Video of the Year, Male Artist and Fan's Choice) and Terri Clark. Terri's been laying low lately but she's got a new CD coming out and I believe she's planning a tour in the next little while.
Down the street and away from all the screaming fans we found Casey Clark taping the Chevy Cross Canada Countdown (one of many things he does). He was gracious enough to pose with me (and put up with my star struckness).
Rob was in town again this weekend but he elected to hand out with Dad who was working a car show. Mom and I picked him up on our way back home and stopped at Liquidation World on the way. I bought the shoes on the left a few months ago and *love* them. They're Sketcher brand Crocs. Saturday I got blue and black ones as well. Oh and they were only $6.88 a pair so it's not like they break the bank.

Look who's on the cover of Country Weekly!!! Isn't Jake cute? :D
My offical CCMA Awards program. I bought it because it has fun anecdotes and mini interviews with each of the nominees.

I had dinner with Mom and Robert at my parents house. Afterwards we were sitting on the deck experiencing all the wonderful sounds of city living. Airplanes flying over, loud annoying music, kids crying, geese overhead, and then to add insult to injury, someone decided to mow their lawn. It was NOT relaxing and it was HOT out. We were debating doing an ice cream run when I logged in to Facebook and had this conversation with my friend Naomi.

So, that's how I ended Saturday. At Naomi's playing Super Scrabble and eating ice cream. A great finish to a busy day.

News

In my “The Countdown Begins” post last week I said “I’d be okay with “teaching” in some other capacity (at a museum or historic site) but not in a classroom.” V commented:
You know, if you think you'd like to work in a museum, maybe you should find out from them what they are looking for...might help to narrow down the class choices.

(V I hope you don’t mind that I’m answering you “publicly”) The truth is, we don’t HAVE many museums around here! That’s one of the reasons I want to move!!!

I am happy to report that I had a very promising conversation with the volunteer coordinator at Fort Langley (the closest national historic site to me) today. He’s going to email me the application and I’ll fill it out and send it back and we’ll see what we can set up from there. I’m a bit nervous to take on a volunteer activity at this time because I already keep myself so busy but I think it will be an excellent opportunity and hopefully it will answer a lot of the questions I have.

I’ll keep you posted!

Announcing: $7.13 a Day

I didn’t announce my new blog (http://713aday.blogspot.com/) when I first launched it because I can’t stand people who say “I’m blogging!” and then never post another entry. It’s kind of like me coming back to blogging. Yes I pretty much missed the first half of the year but now I feel like I’m back on track. I don’t need to announce that, just come back and people will start reading…or not. Which is fine too.

Anyways, I’m three weeks into my new blog and ready to announce it. The first entry pretty much describes the purpose of it: http://713aday.blogspot.com/2009/08/welcome-to-overunder-blog.html

As you will see, I’m not doing particularly well but it’s still providing a place for me to record expenditures and that’s what matters. I’m still maintaining “Coffee, Country Music and the Corporate World” (obviously) because this is where the “stories” go. The two blogs kind of go hand in hand though. They’re both by me and about me. $7.13 will be a bit drier because its fact based but you’re welcome to read anyways. I know one person already does (Hi Desi! ::waving:: ) :)

Insider Report

I’m a blogger but I’m also a blog reader. I am subscribed to close to 100 blogs via Feedblitz but of course many of those don’t update regularly…and a few I don’t read regularly. I need go through and update my subscriptions but I haven’t had the time yet. Most of those are SS friends of some sort but a few are other blogs I’ve stumbled upon. One I’ve been reading for a few years is “Cooking with the Single Guy” http://singleguychef.blogspot.com/
Chef Ben is located in the Bay Area and reviews restaurants I’ll probably never visit but he’s adventurous and by reading his posts I’ve been brave enough to try lots of new dishes because he’s profiled them.

I’ve done the arm chair travel thing to Hawaii (more than once), Buenos Aires and lots of Californian locations. This past weekend he was in New York.

I have a HUGE radar out for anything New York right now. So when I saw that he was there, I was super excited. Then he reviewed a restaurant and I googled the distance from our hotel. It came in at “about one minute”. http://singleguychef.blogspot.com/2009/09/travel-dish-boqueria-soho.html

You can read the comments but it turns out that he stayed at the same hotel that Mere and I are booked into!!! So cool! I did email him and it sounds like a great choice in hotel, and we have some suggestions of places to eat around there too.

Woohoo!

999!

A few months ago I started reading through the Psalms. One per day, thirty per month (it helped to keep track of where I was better). Today, on September 9th, 2009, I read the 99th Psalm…which also has 9 verses.

So Psalm 99:1-9 on 09-09-09

How’s that for a coincidence?

The Countdown Begins

So my Countdown to Ontario has officially started. I don’t know when because I don’t know exactly when I’ll leave but I know that by this time next year, I’ll be in Ontario. That means that pretty much everything that happens from here on is for the last time. The last Labour Day weekend in BC. The last Thanksgiving, last Christmas, etc.

Now that it’s September the information for applying to school in Ontario is officially up as well and I can start to study it and figure out if that is what I actually want to do. And what it will take to make that a reality. It’s exciting and scary all at the same time.

Ontario has a central application system where you can apply to up to three universities at once. I’ve narrowed down my choices geographically (based on the area I want to live when I move). Next step is to decide on what program I want to apply for. I expect it will be some sort of Arts degree. I’m interested in History specifically but languages, literature and geography are also up there. The biggest problem is that I’m still not convinced that there’s actually career opportunities in those fields. Or, I think there are, but I can’t name them and that makes me nervous. The biggest thing is that I don’t want to be a teacher. Not in the traditional institution sense anyways. I’d be okay with “teaching” in some other capacity (at a museum or historic site) but not in a classroom.

So, still lots of questions but I feel like I’m ready to start answering them.

Labour Day Weekend

The rest of the weekend has been pretty quiet. After our trip to Vancouver I went to a bar-b-que at a friends house. It was still kind of rainy so we stayed inside and played "In a Pickle" a new game that Melissa and Jevon gave me for my birthday, and Uno. I didn't get home until 2am which was kind of crazy but we had fun so it was worth it.

Sunday was church and then over to Mom & Dad's for lunch with Robert. That evening I dropped him off at a friend's house and went to bible study at church.

Monday (today) I wanted to stay in my pjs all day but my family convinced me to come over for dinner so I did end up getting dressed. I spent most of the day puttering around the house. I scrapbooked a bit, made some cards, watched a movie and read some books. It's been good :)

Canada Line

Robert has a friend who works at West Jet and she's signed him up as her "companion" so he can fly dirt cheap, on stand by. He used that when he visited in August and again this weekend. Saturday was grey and drizzly but we decided to do the touristy thing and go ride the new Sky Train extension, the Canada Line from Vancouver Airport to downtown, and back. The new cars are really nice. Large and roomy (both the cars and the seats) and really, really quiet. It's a quick ride from the airport to downtown but a bit boring since most of it is under ground. I guess I'd better get used to that. The New York subway is all under ground :)

In Vancouver we walked through Pacific Centre, a high end shopping mall that goes under ground. We stopped for coffee. I got Starbucks, and Rob, Dad and Aaron got Tim Hortons :)

Robert pondered life with the manequins in Holt Renfrew.
Aaron strikses a pose...
Me, on the train!

The station at YVR. I used to do quarterly meetings at the airport so I got to watch the line being built so it was neat to see it fully finished and ride the train.

PNE and Doc Walker Concert

Sunday, August 27th Meredith and I met up after church and headed into Vancouver for a day at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE). Finding parking was a nightmare (as it usually is) and we ended up parking in the middle of Hastings Race Course.

Our first order of business once we got into the fair grounds was finding food. We surveyed the various international delights and finally settled on poutine for me and yam fries for her...and we split a deep fried mars bar for dessert. Mmmm love fair food!

There were two main attractions that I specifically wanted to see. The nightly concert (which I'll talk about later) and a stage show called "Celtic Legends" described as "Not your average Irish Dance Show, Celtic Legends combines the vigorous steps of Irish Dance with the traditional sounds of Irish folk music for a truly breathtaking performance." I don't know if "breathtaking" necessarily applies since Mere and I both saw Riverdance live when it was in Vancouver but this show was the same concept, although with less dancing. It was only 30 minutes long but that was enough. The music and dancing were both beautiful but they show itself didn't hold your attention very well.
No matter, there was lots of other stuff to see. We went through the "Home Depot Showcase" where they were displaying all manner of home improvement innovations as well as a "Hand Crafted Artisan Studio Furniture Exhibit – by Eastside Culture Crawl". The picture is turned but hopefully you can see some of the unique pieces that were displayed. My favourite was the "Bad Table"

We toured the "Marketplace" were all the "As Seen on TV" people were hocking their wares. We viewed the "container art" and sand sculptures (more pictures on Facebook if you want to see them, and more details here.

We indulged in mini donuts...well, Mere did. I just took pictures :)

In the "Safeway Farm Country" we arrived just as a calf was being born. We missed seeing it actually drop because the crowd was too thick but we saw it just after. Later in the evening we went back to check on it and I took this picture the.
I noticed the reflection of the ferris wheel on Mere's sun glasses so I made her stop so I could take a picture. If that doesn't say "summer" I don't know what does :)

Around 7 we found some dinner ("Texas Taters" and smoked beef on a bun) and settled in for the Doc Walker concert. We sat up on the bleachers because Mere didn't want to stand for the whole concert. I only lasted for a handful of songs before I left and joined the crowd in front of the stage. The sound from the bleachers was fine but it's so much better to be closer to the band.

This is the third time I've seen Doc Walker in concert but the fourth time I've seen them. The fourth being at the Basics for Babies breakfast a few years ago. They only did three songs there though so it wasn't really a concert. I did have tickets to see them the following April but the concert was cancelled so I missed out.

Because it's been awhile, I was super excited to see them. They did all their singles including:
Forgive Me for Giving a Damn (by request)
Coming Home
Rocket Girl
That Train
Maria
She Hasn't Always Been This Way
Get Up
North Dakota Boy
Trying to Get Back to You
Driving with the Brakes On
Beautiful Life
Dave Wasyliw (left) also performed a song that he wrote called "Barbershop". It's not on any of their cd's but I've heard people talk about it on the message board for years so I was excited to finally hear it. I'm happy to report that I love it.

Dave, the lead singer Chris Thornstein and guitarist Murray Pulver are the main members of the band. In all the times I've seen them, they've always had a different bass guitarist and drummer.

Their current bassist is Brent Pearson and the drummer is Steve Broadhurst. Steve he did a fantastic medly of songs including Kiss's "I Was Made for Loving You" and "Staying Alive", the later complete with crazy falsetto. It's hard to describe a country band covering those songs but it totally worked and the crowd ate it up. So fun.

Murray covered some songs during the encore but I was heading back to meet with Mere at that point so I didn't pay attention to what he was singing.

After the concert we had some time to kill before the final show of the night so we got carmel apples and visited the baby calves.

The last show was "KABOOM! A Pyro Musical Spectacular"

A giant countdown celebration to the PNE’s 100th anniversary in 2010, KABOOM! gets the party started. With innovative projection and state-of-the-art lighting, get ready to embark on a high tech trip through one hundred years of PNE History. From the 1910 Grand Opening to the crazy days of Elvis Presley and The Beatles to the grooves of disco, this pyro musical spectacular will transport you through the sights, sounds and music of the past century.

This picture was a "Jail House Rock" number. Note the dancers on the poles...

So, that's another Fair in the books and another amazing concert...and another blog entry that took four days to write and ended up with sideways pictures :P

That explains it!

In March I was gathering up all my paper work for my accountant so she could prepare my annual tax return. As I was doing that I came across a Federal receipt that I didn’t recognize. It turned out that I should have been claiming capital gains/losses on some investment funds that I’ve had since 2002. I had completely overlooked those papers but luckily I save everything so I had all the information I needed to file “T1 Adjustment Request for 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 tax years”. The forms were complicated so I had my accountant prepare them along with my tax return.

Here is what ensued:
April 27 – mail T1 Adjustment Requests
June 12 – received a letter from the CRA “You don’t qualify under ‘Voluntary Disclosure’” (which is how I filed just in case they got unhappy about the fact that I’m seven years let telling them about this)
June 22 – Another letter from CRA “We got your information. We’ll let you know when we look at it.” (uh, thanks)
August 17 – Phone call, I need more info (easy peasy, a bit of BS and a fax and we’re good)
August 25 – Third letter “I’ve reviewed it, I’ll let you know the outcome in a separate mailing. Oh, but don’t worry about 2005. There’s no change there...but keep everything in case we decide to audit you.”
August 31 – Received FOUR separate envelopes. Bottom line? You owe us $26.53

Yep, that’s your tax dollars at work folks! No wonder they don't get anything done. If I had to send a letter everytime I moved a file on my desk I'd take forever too! At least the damage wasn't too bad.

Friday Fill-in #139

Friday Fillins Blog

1. He was a lawyer? Really? Why isn't he a lawyer anymore? What kind of law?

2. Wearing socks is what I look forward to most this time of year. I heart wearing socks

3. My best friend is going to New York with me!!!

4. It feels pretty surreal to be honest with you.

5. Appearances can be deciving sure but sometimes they're not. Sometimes what people look like really is who they are, what they stand for and how they act.

6. The last person I gave a hug to was my brother Seth when I said good-bye :(

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to a surprise engagement party, tomorrow my plans include the annual square dance picnic...which I've NEVER made it out to and Sunday, I want to see Doc Walker at the PNE!

I'm going to New York!

It doesn't feel real.

My best friend Meredith and I have been planning a trip to New York City for our "25th Anniversary" for years. I moved to the neighbourhood in October of 1984 (although when we actually met is up for debate) so 2009 is our "25th Anniversary". I love the idea of New York at Christmas time so we were planning our trip for sometime in December. Last night we booked it.

Leaving Seattle on Boxing Day (December 26th) on a red eye flight and arriving in New York at 6 in the morning. We'll be there for five full days and coming home on New Years Day. That means we get to do New Years Eve in New York. Wow!

I’m the hero of the office.

And I’m a fraud. Actually, you already know I’m a fraud. I named this blog “Coffee, Country Music and the Corporate world” but only because the “C” of coffee fit the alliteration I was looking for. “Starbucks” is really a better term. I don’t drink “coffee” at Starbucks, or at Tim Hortons for that matter. I love going there though and I drink all the frou-frou drinks. At home I drink ::gasp:: instant, sometimes French press if I’m feeling fancy…which isn’t usually, and at work, I drink whatever’s available.

At work I’m responsible for sourcing the coffee so I generally buy whatever is readily available, within budget and satisfactory. Not great, but satisfactory. Well the coffee snobs rebelled. They managed to get our boss to agree to a fancy smancy “grind and brew” coffee machine. I’m a hero because I picked it up from the store. They set it up yesterday and it was like someone had a new puppy. Everyone was oohing and ahhing and watching the first beans be ground. Whatever.

I’m drinking my first cup from the new machine right now and its fine. Better than the crap coffee I normally buy but not something I’m willing to chip in to subsidize.

So, hero, fraud. You be the judge. Me? I’ll stick with basic coffee…and laugh at the snobs :D

Thursday Thunks

1. Have you ever played Bullshit?
Yep, we called it the more benign "cheat" and it usally followed a rousing game of "Asshole"...which we called "Peon". Definite favourites in our house.

2. A dog licks you on your face. Are you disgusted or thinking it was sweet?
Disgusted. I can't stand licky or yappy dogs. Actually, I'd take a drooling baby over a dog any day.

3. Tell us about a fun/special memory you have of a grandparent.
I was in "my" bedroom at their house one evening. The door was open and I saw them pause in the hallway and kiss. My grandparents were NOT at ALL physically demonstrative and I think that's the only time I ever saw them kiss. It was a very private moment that I got to witness and I remember sleeping so soundly because I could feel the love and I felt so secure that night.

4. Have you ever pet a rat?
Possibly. Not something I'd go out of my way to do.

5. If I walked into your kitchen, where are the cups?
In the cupboard between the sink and the fridge.

6. Since you already let me in your home, I found the cup and had water, now where's the bathroom from the kitchen?
Go back towards the front door, turn left and right and it's at the end of the hallway. It's the room with the toilet in it :D

7. Have you ever pet a turtle or tortoise?
Yes, although "pet" is an odd word.

Saturday in Words and Vancouver Aquarium on Sunday

Robert arrived by plane Friday evening and did the "guy thing" after the rehersal that evening. Saturday morning Seth had to report at 9am for pictures before the wedding so Mom, Dad, Aaron and his friend Nathan, Robert, Brittany and I went out for breakfast. After that Robert and Brittany were meeting up with Seth for the wedding so I headed out to Hicks Lake for a birthday party for Chris & Leah's daughter, Brooklyn's birthday party. I didn't take any pictures there but it was a nice relaxing day by the lake. We sat around and visited, watched Brooklyn open her presents and went for a canoe ride. In the evening I came back to Mom & Dad's and canned peaches!

Sunday morning Seth and Brittany drove Seth's friend Conrad to the ferry and then we met up with them at the Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park. Between Brittany and myself we took well over 300 pictures during the day. I've uploaded about half to Facebook. These ones are some of my favourite.

The Aquarium was BUSY! It's a good thing we go there as early as we did because we got in without having to wait. The rest of the day the line stretched way out the door and down the side of the building. Crazy considering it costs $28 to get in. Yes it's a fantastic facility and they do good work but I still think that's an atrocious amount. Heck, I thought it was bad back when it was $14. $28 is highway robbery. Anyways, after I bit the bullet and paid the entrance fee we started planning out where we wanted to go. Robert needed to be at the airport by 6 to get on standby for his flight home so we were on a bit of shortened time line. We decided to start with the new "4D" experience, hence the glasses on Mom and Brittany, right.

Next we caught the dolphin show. My camera has a bad time lag so it was hard to capture these fast critters, but I got a few good shots.

After the dolphin show we left the Aquarium and got our picnic lunch from the car. Seth had requested Mom's "bandito wings" so she made a batch of those along with potato salad. After lunch we headed back to the Aquarium and worked our way sysytematically through the displays.

We saw the beluga tank with the new baby beluga, although we only saw them from above because the line to go below was over 20 minutes long. Inside we saw everything from sharks and alligators to starfish and sea anenomes and even "found Nemo"!

We felt kind of rushed all day but we managed to see everything and that's what counted. This is my favourite picture of Robert. A few of the tanks had these bubbles that you could view the fish from. It gave a totally different view.

When we finished at the Aquarium we drove around Stanley Park and stopped at Prospect Point for a few minutes to admire the view. Then we headed home. Of course after all that hurrying we ended up with more time than we thought so we managed to fit in one last family dinner before Mom and Dad took Robert to the airport.

Later in the evening Mom, Dad, Seth, Brittany and I went mini golfing. It was a great way to end the day.
Monday Seth and Brittany were at the PNE all day so I didn't see them at all. Tuesday I saw them at Mom & Dad's in the evening for a bit and today we're going out for lunch before they hit the road again.
It has been wonderful having them here. Hopefully next time it won't be so long before we see them again!

Summer Night Market

Friday evening Seth was at the rehersal so Mom, Brittany and I went shopping! Our ultimate destination was the Summer Night Market in Richmond but it didn't open until 7pm so we popped in to Daiso on the way. Daiso is basically a Japanese dollar store (well, two dollar store) but it's fun to visit.

We got to the market around 7:30 and started with the food booths because we were all starving. You can get plenty of weird and wonderful food there. It's like a fair, but with Asian flair! I started with a "wheel cake" which is a doughy pastry filled with Nutella. There was a lot of Nutella available there. Yummy!

Next up was huge spring rolls, and skewers of chicken and potato wrapped in bacon with a mango drink to wash it all down. Oh, and deep fried sweet potato balls. They were really, really gooey and I ended up throwing half the stick away.

We skipped all the seafood although there was plenty of it available. Squid, prawns, "curry fish balls" etc. No thank you!

The booths are filled with all sorts of things. Lots of cell phone accessories, Brittany got a charger for her iPhone, movies, decorations, blankets, shoes, purses (I FINALLY found a white purse that I love. I've been looking for months) and more. Part of the market is the thrill of the hunt. The other part is just enjoying a beautiful summer evening in an incredibly diverse city.
I uploaded a bunch more photos to Facebook if you're interested.

This is different

I was going through some draft posts yesterday and I found this one. I wrote it on February 7th of this year but never published it for some reason:
I was just talking to my brother Seth. He and Robert are out shopping for Valentines gifts and the question of "how much should an engagement ring cost" came up so they called for my opinon. Of course they prefaced it by saying they're NOT buying rings, just wondering.

Anyways, Seth also told me that whoever he marries, be it his current girlfriend if it develops like that or someone else, needs to have a lot of MY qualities! My willingness to try new things and be spontaneous. Wow. I know they say a girl often looks for someone like her dad but I've never heard a guy admit that he likes the qualities in his sister that much...
It's timely because, as you know, Seth is here right now with his girl friend Brittany. We had dinner in White Rock last night with my parents and then walked along the water front. The path doesn't allow for five people to walk abreast so Brittany and I strolled ahead. We had a blast. Laughing, making comments about people and their clothes and discussing everything from cheap sunglasses to country music.

I started this blog after Seth broke up with his first long time girlfriend (aka the bride at the wedding on Saturday) so I haven't talked about her here. I'm trying to remember if she and I ever "clicked" like Brittany and I have. Maybe it's been to long but I don't think it was ever this way. She was always "Seth's girlfriend" whereas Brittany seems to be much more of her own person and relates to us that way.

The rehersal is tonight followed by a "guys night out" so I'm taking Brittany and we're going shopping :D I'll let you know how it goes.

We're Together Again

Seth’s here. He arrived with his girlfriend Brittany yesterday. They’ll be in town for about a week but will be busy with wedding stuff this weekend. Seth’s best friend is marrying Seth’s ex-girlfriend…and Seth’s the best man. A little too close for my tastes but it’s not my life.

Last night Dad set up the brand new patio set that he bought on the back deck. He just finished sanding the whole deck and painting it too so it’s really nice and fresh out there. We had a lovely dinner of bar-b-que steak, baked potatoes and corn on the cob with “pie a la mode” for dessert.

Today Seth, Brittany and possibly Aaron are shopping at Metrotown and I think we’re planning on getting together this evening. If Robert can get off work he may be flying out for the weekend (in on Friday night, out on Sunday night) but we haven’t heard yet. If he can it will be nice to have the whole family together again!

I'll take that as a compliment

There were three bananas on the top of the fridge at work all last week. Finally on Friday one of my coworkers presented them to me (gotta love the bonuses at a non-profit LOL) I took them home and made them into banana bread. I brought it in Tuesday morning and left it on the counter in the kitchen. By 3:30 there was only one piece left. I'll take that as a compliment!

Rational Hesitation

From my Starbucks cup on Wednesday:

The Way I See It #76

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating – in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life.

Rational hesitation. That’s the story of my life. As I get closer to my goal of moving to Ontario, my commitment deepens and I have to admit, my hesitation is going away as well. More and more people are learning of my plan and, once they hear my reasons, they support me whole heartedly.

My newest consideration/decision, what ever you want to call it, is the idea of going to school when I move to Ontario. The timing certainly makes sense and I am looking for a change. School would be a big change and a good challenge. I’m still not 100% sold on what I’d take but that’s part of the fun of it. Exploring different options.

So now my rational hesitation about school. There are so many pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Is school ever wasted?
  • I’d learn so much!
  • It would be fun
  • It’s slightly more flexible than having a full time job although I’d be poor
  • I can justify working at Starbucks (something which I’m inexplicably obsessed with doing)

Cons:

  • Financially student loans are the only way to swing is. Is that crazy?
  • Are there actually jobs in the history field? (which is what I’m leaning towards studying. Aside from teaching. I don’t want to teach.)
  • It’s school. It’s been ten years since I was in school.
  • I know nothing about being a student. It’s a whole new world to learn about.

I can’t even think about apply for the 2010/2011 year until September so I can’t commit to anything. Until then the rational hesitation rules.
